About The Service

The Cardiff Bay Barrage represents one of the key elements in the regeneration of South Cardiff and has created an inland lake of approximately 200 hectares.  Construction of the Barrage was undertaken by Cardiff Bay Development Corporation starting in 1994 and completed in 1999.  From 1st April 2000 Cardiff County Council became the successor body and established the Cardiff Harbour Authority to manage the associated responsibilities. The Barrage includes an 800m long embankment, 5 sluice gates, a fish pass, three locks, associated bascule bridges, navigational aids, compressor stations, Pont y Werin, river flow stations and an outer harbour.  Whilst the Act provided the powers to construct the Barrage, it also imposes obligations on the Harbour Authority with respect to a variety of operational and environmental issues.  The key priority for the Barrage is now as a flood defence structure.
