Applying for Jobs with Us

  • Cardiff Council recognises the critical role that recruitment plays in its commitment to the Welsh Language and in pursuit of this, our recruitment process welcomes applications in either Welsh or English, with advertisements and supporting documents being available in both languages.

The quickest and easiest way to apply for a job with Cardiff Council is on-line. To apply on-line, simply click on ‘Apply Now’ on the top and bottom right hand side on the job advertisement and the application form will be displayed.

All adverts on our career site close at 11.59 pm on the specified closing date. Please pay particular attention to the date that the advert closes, as on-line applications cannot be submitted once the closing time has passed. In addition, once a job has closed, job descriptions and person specifications will no longer be available on the site and in view of this it is advisable to save a copy to your local drive.

In exceptional circumstances, if it is not possible for you to apply on-line, you may request an application pack by telephoning (029) 20872222 and quoting the job reference.

  • Completing your Application

The information you provide in your application must be accurate. If you conceal or misrepresent relevant information at any stage during the recruitment process, your application may be disqualified.

    Supporting Information Section

The supporting information section is the most important part of your application form as the decision on whether to shortlist you for interview is mainly based on the information you provide here. When drafting this section, please pay particular attention to the person specification, as it lists all of the essential and desirable criteria, together with the behavioural competencies, which you need to evidence. You must ensure that you address all of this in your application form in order to be shortlisted for interview. In order to help you please refer to the Behavioural Competence Framework which is available on our website by clicking the link below. Also available is our Application Guidance document, which provides more information on how to structure the evidence you provide against the competencies.

The supporting information section should not include your CV or personal information such as name, address, email address etc.

    References

When completing your application you will be asked to provide the name and contact details of two referees, one of which must be your current or last employer. If you have not been employed before, we will require a character referee such as a college tutor, teacher or someone other than a relative, who can comment on your suitability. Referees will not be contacted until after a verbal offer of employment has been made.

    Criminal Convictions

The Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 sets out that when applying for jobs you do not need to disclose any criminal convictions you may have which are “spent”. Some jobs however are exempt from the provisions of this act, which means that you must state on the application form all criminal convictions, cautions and reprimands etc. you have, regardless of whether they are spent or not. The application form will clearly state what you need to disclose.

    Declaration of Interests

When applying for a job with the Council you will be asked to disclose any relationship you have with an elected member or senior officer of the Council. Additionally you will be required to declare whether you are,or have been an elected member of the Council in the last twelve months and whether you have any business or other interests, which would cause real or observed conflict with the duties and responsibilities of the post you are applying for.

  • Shortlisting

    Anonymous Recruitment

The Council embraces equality and diversity. In order to ensure that shortlisting decisions are free from bias, all candidate identification details in our application forms are only visible to recruiting managers once they have completed the shortlisting stage. In view of this, any communication you receive up to that stage in the process will be addressed to you as ‘applicant’ rather than by name. Should you wish to raise a query in respect of your application, prior to the point at which the shortlist has been drawn up you will need to quote your candidate ID number which is included in the e-mail you will have received acknowledging your application.

    Candidates with a disability

Cardiff Council is an accredited Disability Confident employer and actively promotes its commitment to good disability employment practice.
