About The Service

The Into Work Advice Service provides support to people who are actively seeking employment or looking to upskill; the team is able to offer support and intensive mentoring through externally funded project and volunteering opportunities.

The Employer Liaison Team, which is part of the Into Work Advice Service, provide local businesses with a complete pre-employment package. The team is able to match suitable and skilled jobseekers to job opportunities with the local businesses. The Small Business Advisor sits within the Employer Liaison team in a strategic and line-management capacity.

About the job

The Small Business Advisor role will support Into Work clients who wish to start a business. Taking referrals from our Gateway service and employment support projects, the role holder will maintain a caseload of clients, meeting regularly to provide advice and guidance on a range of issues around self-employment including registration, planning, marketing and financial considerations.

The role will have responsibility for working in partnership with appropriate external services to fulfil client needs as well as researching grants and funding available to clients and assisting with applications.

The role will have responsibility for coordinating public information events throughout the year and attending seminars, conferences and networking events as well as facilitating sponsored events.

The role holder will also be responsible for growing the service and working with the Council’s Communications team to promote the service and raise awareness of the offer.

What We Are Looking For From You

  • Thorough and up to date knowledge of employment and benefit issues and an understanding of welfare reform and the implications for participants.
  • Personal experience of self-employment/starting a business or experience in a relevant support role
  • Thorough knowledge of the steps required to set up as self-employed or start a business and the range of financial support available to clients.
  • A dynamic and innovative approach to developing the service.
  • Experience of working with clients who are experiencing poverty and barriers to employment and an understanding of the support needs of long term unemployed, economically inactive people, young people, families and single customers
  • Understanding of the economic landscape in relation to market opportunities.
  • Excellent time management skills and demonstrable ability to meet deadlines and achieve goals

Additional information

The post holder will be required to work on a hybrid basis including working from home and from various Council sites.

This post is temporary until 31st March 2024.
