About The Service

You will earn a minimum of £21,029 per annum working full time (37hrs) or £10.90 per hour pro rata, as we are Voluntary Living Wage Employer.

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an ambitious, motivated individual to become a qualified technician within our Central Transport Services, based at our ‘state of the art’ facility at Coleridge Road, Grangetown, Cardiff.

The Council’s Fleet Service maintains a mixed fleet of over 900 vehicles ranging from small cars and vans up to large heavy goods vehicles in the form of Tippers, Flatbeds, Luton’s, Access Platforms, Gritters, Gullies, Cranes, Hook Loaders, and Refuse Vehicles up to 32 tonnes GVW. The Council has the ambition of growing its fleet maintenance service by providing services to external organisations whilst ensuring our internal stakeholders are provided with a first-class service.

Reporting to the Service Manager, over the course of the apprenticeship you will attend Bridgend College, Pencoed one day a week for 4 years (term time) to complete Level 2 and Level 3 Apprenticeships in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance & Repair.

About the job

This is a 4-year fixed term post.

The successful candidate will assist and carry out a range of duties in the workshop including vehicle inspections, testing and checking of systems and components, diagnosing faults and repair or replace worn parts. You will be trained to use a range of tools and specialist equipment including state of the art diagnostic equipment.

What We Are Looking For From You

The successful candidate will have, in particular:

  • a full driving license;
  • 4 GCSEs grade C or above (or equivalent subject at Level 2) in English (or Welsh) Language, Mathematics, a Science or technical subject, plus one other subject;
  • computer literate;
  • ability to organise own work and get things done;
  • effective communication and interpersonal skills, and
  • strong commitment to excellence in service delivery and customer satisfaction.
