About The Service

Rent Smart Wales is the designated Single Licensing Authority for Wales for the private rented sector. The service was established in November 2015 following the implementation of the Housing (Wales) Act 2014 and is hosted by Cardiff Council.

The Act places a legal duty on private landlords of rental properties across Wales to register their rental properties. The Act also places a duty on any landlord or agent conducting letting and managing activities at any rental property in Wales to be licensed. In addition to maintaining the register, the determination of licence applications and enforcement of non-compliance, Rent Smart Wales has a responsibility to regulate all licensees.

Rent Smart Wales benefits from web-based systems designed with the user in mind, contact centre telephone technology and partnership arrangements with the 22 Local Authorities across Wales.
