About the service

Do you love dogs? We are currently looking for a Pound Attendant at Cardiff Dogs Home.  As part of a very busy frontline service you will be required to assist the Council in discharging its responsibilities relating to stray dogs and encouraging responsible dog ownership.

About the Job

The core tasks are caring for and handling dogs in a kennel environment including cleaning, feeding and exercising them, looking after their health and assisting vets. You will be responsible for the cleaning of the office block and keeping the grounds clean and tidy. You will be dealing with queries and complaints from members of the public in relation to the impounding of stray dogs and their subsequent return to owner or re-homing. You will be part of a 24 hour cover rota which will include nights, evenings and weekends. You will monitor the security of the Dogs Home out of hours. You will assist the vet in humanely euthanising dogs where this is required.

Other tasks will include updating the website, using Council IT systems, keeping records up to date, micro-chipping, tracing & registering microchips and undertaking vet checks.

 

37 Hours 12 hour shift pattern over a 4 week period: A. Mon, Tue, Wed 7am-7pm, Sun 7am-7pm B. Mon, Tue, Wed 7pm-7am C. Thu, Fri, Sat 7am-7pm, Sun 7pm-7am D. Thu, Fri, Sat 7pm-7am

  • Experience of administering and recording medication for dogs
  • Experience of the assessment of canine behaviour

This salary is subject to the Living Wage supplement, which brings pay rates up to £9.90 per hour (scp 1-3). This supplement will be reviewed in April 2023 and thereafter annually in April.  Cardiff Council reserves the right to make any changes to, or removal of, the Living Wage supplement.
