Our Bereavement Services Team is looking to employ a Corporate Apprentice based at Thornhill Crematorium, Thornhill Road Rhiwbina Cardiff CF14 9UA.

Our Bereavement Services provides burial and cremation services across a number of sites throughout the City dealing with bereaved families and funeral professionals on a daily basis. Staff also provide help and advice to the public on all aspects of cremations, burials, memorialisation and historical records.

About the job

In this Corporate Apprentice role you will be based in Thornhill crematorium and will learn to undertake a range of tasks to gain the Cremator Technicians Training Scheme qualification to enable you to operate cremators and work in a crematorium environment. In addition, you will also undertake a Level 2 Business Administration Apprenticeship in the role to complement the full range of duties you will learn undertake.

Under supervision you will learn to: carryout cremations in accordance with statutory and regulatory requirements; operate cremators and ancillary equipment; maintain cremators and emission monitoring equipment; complete administration relating to cremated remains to ensure correct identity, storage and disposal in accordance with the Cremation Regulations 1930; ensure funeral services are carried out in accordance with instructions issued by the bereaved and undertake ‘chapel attending’ duties; meet and greet funeral cortege for scheduled funerals and prepare and operate music and visual tribute on a digital music system and; carryout cleaning duties of the chapels and ancillary buildings.

You will also learn to undertake and be required to use IT systems; email and excel and learn to help our service users with their enquiries developing excellent customer service skills by telephone, email or face to face. Must be physically able to meet the manual aspect of the role. The role is not suitable for home working.

The service team will help and encourage you to develop in the role and you will be encouraged to take on a variety of duties. You will receive supervision and on the job training and will have a named mentor to support you to deliver an efficient and effective service in a positive, customer-focused manner. The Corporate Apprentice Scheme also provides opportunities to enhance your transferrable skills, and to support your career progression.

We are moving to online and homeworking working and you will be encouraged to develop the skills to support this. Where homeworking is required, you will be given the necessary equipment however, you will need to arrange your own internet connectivity.

As training progresses you may be required to work a shift pattern of 8am-4pm; 9am-5pm; 10am-6pm and 1pm-9pm. Occasional Saturday working may also be required. or service operational hours).

Our Corporate Apprentices gain valuable experience working for the largest Council in Wales. Whilst we cannot guarantee that the appointed candidate will go on to secure a further role at the end of this initial contract, they will be supported and encouraged to take advantage of the many opportunities available within our organisation, in order to progress their career.

As this is a development role, you cannot apply for this role if you have already gained the qualification offered in this role or an NVQ in the same subject at the same level or higher.

Unfortunately, Graduates are not eligible to apply for this post due to the level of the qualification being studied (level 2). Graduates can apply for Corporate Trainee roles and other apprentice roles offering a Level 3 qualification or above in addition to other vacancies.

This salary is subject to the Living Wage Supplement that tops up the basic rate of pay to £9.30 per hour. The supplement will be reviewed every April. Cardiff Council reserves the right to make any changes to, or removal of, the Living Wage Supplement.
