About the job

This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience at the heart of local government, supporting policy development and strategic decision-making within Wales' largest local authority. You'll work with experienced professionals, senior leaders and elected Members, helping to ensure decision-makers have access to clear, evidence-based information while contributing to projects that make a real difference to Cardiff and its communities.

As this is a Level 3 apprenticeship, we welcome applications from a wide range of candidates, including graduates seeking practical experience in local government and policy development.

In this Corporate Apprentice (Level 3) role, you will gain first-hand experience of how policy is developed and delivered within Wales' capital city and one of the UK's Core Cities. Working as part of the Corporate Policy and Cabinet Office Team, you will:

  • Learn how to undertake research and analysis on issues affecting Cardiff, the Council and local communities.
  • Support the development and delivery of policies that help shape the Council's priorities and services.
  • Assist with the preparation of briefings, reports, presentations, speeches and communications for senior leaders and elected Members.
  • Develop an understanding of how key decisions are made within local government and how the Council's policy agenda is delivered.
  • Gather, analyse and present information to support policy development, performance monitoring and decision-making.
  • Work alongside colleagues across the Council on strategic projects and improvement initiatives.
  • Explore the use of AI and digital technologies, including Microsoft Copilot, to support policy development, organisational learning and service improvement.
  • Develop high-quality written and verbal communication skills, learning how to present information clearly, concisely and appropriately for different audiences.
  • Develop the ability to work accurately and professionally in an environment where sound judgement, attention to detail and effective communication are essential.
  • Build valuable research, analytical, problem-solving and digital skills while working at the heart of local government.

To support your development, you will undertake a Welsh Government Apprenticeship Framework Qualification in Digital Skills for Business at Level 3 in the role, and will receive on the job training and supervision to help you deliver an efficient and effective service in a positive and customer focussed manner. You will also be supported by your manager and a named mentor who will encourage you to develop a range of transferrable skills to support your career progression.

Many of our teams work online with a mix of home and hybrid (office) working. Where homeworking is required, you will be given the necessary equipment and training, however, you will need to arrange your own internet connectivity (support may be available to help with this).
