The £1.3bn City Deal signals a region that’s open for business and our role is to develop and promote the way in which business will be delivered – but not in a “business as usual” way. Our Mantra is good growth and we want to drive the kind of enterprise development that is genuinely sustainable, inclusive and meaningful to the 1.5m people that live in the region in our many diverse towns, cities, valleys and rural areas. The city deal has 3 major targets to fulfil- to increase GVA by 5%, to deliver 25,000 new high skill jobs and leverage £4bn in private investment. The challenge is a significant but so is the opportunity to shape our own destiny and become more self- reliant, resourceful and resilient. We want our young people to see a future in the region and therefore our approach is vested in thinking local but acting global, setting out our competitive advantages and levering in the kind of investment, networks and opportunities that will fundamentally move the dial. With a new investment framework and three funds which seek to inspire innovation investment, infrastructure investment and a challenge based approach to problem solving we want to inspire creativity. City Deal is no silver bullet but it does provide the opportunity to break with dependency and set out a new path on the road to not just better productivity but enhanced prosperity for all and real public value.
