Cardiff Council is looking to recruit a highly motivated individual to assist in the training, support and quality checking relating to Housing Benefit, Council Tax reduction, Free school meals and Uniform grants any related issues to individuals and groups.

About the job

Full training will be provided and will give successful applicants a wide range of useful skills and experience. You will gain experience of dealing with customer enquiries by telephone and in writing. You will also be trained to use various IT systems.

 

There are no formal qualifications required however experience of working in a Benefits or advice environment is essential. The successful applicants will have good communication skills and the ability to adapt and learn quickly. A positive and customer focused attitude is essential as is the ability to work to targets and deadlines.

Internal candidates who wish to apply for this position on a secondment basis must obtain approval prior to application using Form SEC1 (4.C.081). Requests may only be approved by the relevant Director/ Assistant Director/ Chief Officer or senior nominated officer graded no lower than OM2 or in the case of schools-based staff the Headteacher / Governing Body.

What We Are Looking For From You

To assist with the provision of a high-quality Benefits Service.

To assist in the training, support and quality checking relating to Housing Benefit, Council Tax reduction, Free school meals and Uniform grants any related issues to individuals and groups.

To deliver training to those who require additional help and actively seek to support staff through the training and quality checks. Reporting the results to staff in a positive constructive manner and making suggestions for improvement, so that knowledge and accuracy is improved.

To provide ongoing training/support and quality checking of staff and also those returning from long term sickness, maternity leave or identified by their manager as requiring additional support or help. To report regularly to managers on the results of additional training and checking with any recommendations for solutions to improve work where necessary.

To provide quality checking as required for statistical purposes and for management, in Performance Reviews and Competency issues and report on findings regularly.

To independently develop and deliver training courses as required in order to ensure staff receive the support they need in one to one training sessions, or other issues identified by their manager.

To assist as required with the development and maintenance of procedures and help ensure that staff are kept up to date with legislative and procedural changes.

To provide assistance and support to other staff and managers regarding the interpretation of Council Tax & Benefits legislation and procedures and the correct operation of computer systems.

To play an active part in the Benefits Team, ensuring that good communication is maintained within the team, providing cover for other officers and contributing to the work of the team as a whole.

To seek to ensure customer satisfaction, by working to improve customer service, and resolve customer complaints.

To practically assist in the co-ordination and operation of any Quality systems adopted by the service area.

To carry out any general office duties as reasonably required including maintaining all necessary records and to providing monitoring information as required.

To take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and other persons who may be affected by your acts and omissions and to comply with all health and safety legislation as appropriate.

As a term of your employment you may be required to undertake such other duties and/or times of work as may reasonably be required of you, commensurate with your grade or general level of responsibility within the organisation.
