About The Service

The Council’s central Communications and External Affairs team offers essential communications, media and design support and advice to all areas of the organisation, and works closely with our partners and stakeholders to deliver industry–recognised services. Our media relations work focuses on protecting and enhancing the reputation of the Council. We work closely with media channels which are most used by local people including local print media, commercial radio stations and regional broadcasters.

About the job

As a Press Officer you will be responsible for responding to enquiries from journalists, writing press releases, arranging and managing spokespeople on behalf of the council, working on council events which are of interest to the media, managing the media, monitoring media coverage, fostering good relationships with journalists, proofreading and creating content for the council’s social media channels

What We Are Looking For From You

We are looking for someone:
1. To respond quickly and effectively to local and national media enquiries on a daily basis, ensuring the council’s response is reported effectively at all times.
2. To research and write press releases and features for local press and specialist publications.
3. To identify and prepare content for the Council’s social media channels.
4. To target local and national media, trade and specialist publications with positive stories about the work of Cardiff Council and Cardiff as a European Capital.
5. To assist in the planning and organisation of media campaigns and launches of council and partner initiatives and policies.
6. To arrange Photocalls
7. To assist with the monitoring and evaluation of media coverage
8. to act as a council spokesperson when authorised
9. To assist the media team in providing full and detailed advice and information for Cabinet and elected members as appropriate via established procedures in order that they are fully informed and involved in appropriate decision making.
10. To assist media team to ensure that any legal, statutory and other relevant provisions governing or affecting the Council, or any other directions from the Chief Executive, are strictly observed in order to ensure probity and to protect the Council from legal challenge.
11. To undertake or contribute to, as assigned, any allocated cross authority project in order to ensure its successful outcome.
12. To participate actively in supporting the principles and practice of equality of opportunity as laid down in the organisation's Equal Opportunities Policy.
13. To take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and other persons who maybe affected by your acts and omissions and to comply with all health and safety legislation as appropriate. (NB The exact responsibilities will depend on the post)
As a term of your employment you may be required to undertake such other duties and/or times of work as may reasonably be required of you, commensurate with your grade or general level of responsibility within the organisation, at your initial place of work or based at any other establishment.

Additional information

This post is part time and will work 18.5 hours per week.
