Benefits

  • Generous Pension Contributions

The Council provides you with access to generous pension schemes. Depending on the job you do, you will be enrolled into one of two pension schemes:

    Local Government Pension Scheme

    OR

    Teachers’ Pension Scheme

All relevant employees with a contract of three months or more are enrolled into the Local Government Pension Scheme.  If you are a teacher, you will be automatically enrolled into the Teachers’ Pensions scheme from the first day of employment.

As your Employer, we will pay a generous contribution into the scheme on top of the contributions that you pay.  If you contribute to the pension schemes you will also pay a little less tax each month.

You are able to opt out of the pension scheme if you wish.

Your final pension will be based on your pay and how long you are in the scheme.  It is not based on the state of the financial markets when you retire. You will receive annual pension statements so you will see how your pension is building up.

There is also the ability for you to boost your pension by paying more contributions, for which tax relief is applied.

Local Government Pension Scheme members are able to take part in our Shared Cost Additional Voluntary Contribution Scheme administered by our partners AVC Wise.  This scheme enables employees to make cost efficient retirement savings alongside the Local Government Pension Scheme.

  • Life Assurance cover

The pension schemes identified above include life assurance cover.  Your spouse or civil partner, or other nominated person may be entitled to receive death in service benefits of a lump sum payment and a pension, the calculation of which will be made by the relevant pension scheme administrators.
