Learning & Development

  • Cardiff Academy

Cardiff has its own Learning and Development unit called the Academy.  It provides a variety of training facilities at the prestigious City Hall venue where we deliver a wide range of courses that will help employees to fulfil their needs. In addition, a comprehensive suite of on-line courses is also available and employees are encouraged to access these as part of their development.

  • Induction

As a new member of staff you will be invited to take part in an induction process, which is designed to welcome you and help you to establish yourself quickly and effectively into your new role. Your induction will help you to see how you fit into the wider organisation and understand how you can contribute to the aims and objectives of the Council.

  • Welsh Language

The Council actively encourages and supports members of staff to learn Welsh or to improve their skills in Welsh and offers a flexible and corporately funded package of training opportunities which enables staff and managers to choose the best option for their particular service area.

We encourage all staff to use their Welsh language skills, and aim to provide support and opportunities for Welsh speakers and learners to use the language at work.

The Council has a network of Welsh language coordinators and champions across our various Directorates and Service Areas, who support the work of the Bilingual Cardiff team in implementing the Welsh Language Standards and promoting the use of the Welsh language internally.

  • Coaching and Mentoring

Coaching and mentoring are effective approaches to developing employees. The Council is committed to enhancing employee skills, knowledge and performance. At Cardiff Council, we use coaching and mentoring models to intrinsically link need to overall learning and development strategies.

  • Post-entry Training

Post entry training may be available, depending on the type of job you are employed in.  It is recognised that there is a need to support employees with professional qualifications where possible dependent on the course requested, the development requirements/workforce planning requirements and the development needs of the employee.

  • Reimbursementof Professional Registration Fees

Professionalregistration fees for employees who are employed in regulated activity (e.g.teachers, classroom support workers, social workers, residential child careemployees, annual practising certificate for Solicitors) and who need to holdregistration with a professional body to be able to work will be reimbursed bythe Council.

  • Apprenticeships

We can help source fully funded Apprenticeship qualifications to suit most roles and professions across the Council.   Studying for an Apprenticeship qualification involves following a planned development programme that can be tailored to meet your needs and linked to the job role. It usually involves monthly training and development sessions on site with a dedicated training provider assessor and, depending on the qualification and provider, may also involve some off site training or support.
